David Whelan's Substack finally pushed me to look at his itinerary including the map of Manhattan and the straight line from Leonard's room at the Algonquin Hotel to Chapman's at the Sheraton leading right to the Dakota -- it smacks of a plan drawn up for ease and efficiency. It brings the two gunmen together and allows them to spend 3 days resting and getting to know each other before setting off on their mission on the night of December 8.
The Leonard I knew would have likely agreed to be the assassin's spook handler. A backup player in the operation where the patsy was already chosen. Trained and skilled at hypnosis from his early days, Leonard could have got Chapman in and out of trance - I've seen him do it. He did it to me. Leonard could put a whole audience under his hypnotic command. He did it at the Isle of Wight in 1970. I saw him do it in Hamilton, Ontario in 1975.
If I were to guess what happened, I would say they went out to lunch, then back to the hotel to test their weapons, maybe some target practice and a visit to the Dakota to check out the site.
As the second shooter and master of mind control, Leonard probably felt confident Chapman would take Lennon out near the entrance - but Chapman's shots missed. Maybe he intended them to miss. Students of Sasaki Roshi at the time I joined their community and started studying with the leading teacher of Rinzai Zen in America, may remember (I certainly do) a string of teisho lectures he gave in the spring and summer of 1983. Leonard had shown up that winter after a long absence and the Roshi, in his mid 70s, was looking for a successor.
At Leonard's urging, he gave a series of talks in which he criticized the Peace Movement from the perspective of Rinzai, whose teaching is considered almost militaristic in emphasizing sudden insight and action over contemplation. Leonard sat in the audience listening but clearly he had implanted the John Lennon story in Roshi's mind.
Lennon was a phony, an angry man who pretended to be promoting peace- while a real war raged inside him. Sitting passively in meditation while your thoughts rage out of control does not lead to true Peace, said the Roshi. We need to be masters of our unconscious emotions- at least that was my reading of those lectures. Quit pretending, be your authentic true Self- and you might avoid assassination.
But it's hard to speak against Peace. After a few weeks the Roshi dropped the topic, and instead proposed that his students start their own Peace Movement by sincerely practicing Zen with the force of all their energy and will.
